Belhaven Chamber hosts Christmas tour of homes

BELHAVEN — Nothing says Christmas like a home dressed up for the holidays. And visitors to Belhaven can get a behind-closed-doors look at some of them at the Candlelight Tour of Homes on Dec. 14.

Hosted by the Belhaven Chamber of Commerce, the tour happens every other year, and proceeds support the Chamber’s projects in the town. This year, all money raised by the tour will be used in the spring to create landscaping around the Chamber’s new signs marking the town’s main entrances.

Seven houses are on this year’s tour, including one that made such an impression during the 2017 tour, it’s back on the tour again this year, according to Diana Lambeth, Chamber president.

“Edith and Nelson Guys’ house is the one that’s decorated incredibly inside,” Lambeth said. “She has umpteen Christmas trees in the house. She goes all out for Christmas.”

Another showstopper is the Water Street home of Molly Joyner and Paul Mickler.

REPEAT PERFORMANCE: This East Main Street home made such an impression owners Edith and Nelson Guy got a repeat invitation to participate in the Candlelight Tour of Homes. It was featured on the last tour, held in 2017.

“They just decorate like you would not believe,” Lambeth said.

Also on the this year’s holiday homes tour are the homes of Barb and Pat Ball, Eileen Sanger, Ali and Vaughn King, Bev and Gary Ridgewell and the circa-1905 Broad Street home of Jenny and Eric Parton.

The self-guided tour runs from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m., with the ideal starting point at the Chamber office on Water Street, where participants can pick up their reserved tickets and have a cup of hot cider or coffee. Lambeth said refreshments may be offered at some of the homes, as well.

The Chamber limits the number of tickets sold to 100, to make sure there are no overcrowding issues and that everyone has the time to see each decorated-for-the-holidays home.

Plenty of activities precede the Candlelight Tour of Homes: earlier that day, Belhaven’s Christmas parade is set for 11 a.m. and the Toy Trains of Belhaven display will be open at the old City Hall building. A kids’ store will give children the opportunity to pick a gift for parents or grandparents from a selection of gently used items — all for $1 — and the Festival of Trees, sponsored by the Belhaven Arts Council, will have an array of Christmas trees on display, as well as vendors selling hand-crafted goods at the Wilkinson Center.

Lambeth said it’s a Christmas celebration worth attending, and turnout for the homes tour has always been good.

“They can reserve their ticket by calling the chamber at 252-943-3770 and pick it up that night. We’ll have the Chamber open that night so this will be the starting point,” Lambeth said.

IN THE SPIRIT: A smattering of decorating to come adorns another East Main Street home.
