A Washington man was sent to the hospital Thursday afternoon after a collision between his moped and a Beaufort Area Transit System bus. According to Washington Police and Fire Services Director Stacy Drakeford, the driver of the moped, Phillip Smith, suffered minor, non-life-threatening injuries due to the collision.

The Washington Police Department and Washington Fire-Rescue-EMS responded the wreck at the corner of North Market and East Seventh streets at around 2:30 p.m. Thursday. EMS personnel transported the Smith from the scene to Vidant Beaufort Hospital.

Drakeford said Anthony Northern was driving the BATS bus at the time of the accident. As of Thursday evening, Drakeford said WPD investigators had obtained footage of the wreck from a camera system installed on the bus, and were studying the film to determine the sequence of events leading up to the crash.

“(Responding officers) just got the footage from BATS, and now they’re looking at it,” Drakeford said Thursday. “They’re looking at it, but they need a little more help interpreting what they saw, based on how the camera angle is.”

After the wreck, Washington Fire-Rescue-EMS personnel worked to dislodge the moped from underneath the front bumper of the bus. Drakeford says the WPD is continuing to investigate the wreck based on the footage recovered.

That investigation will in turn determine who was at fault in the accident and if any charges will be filed.
