5-year-old shot in Chocowinity

CHOCOWINITY — The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting in Chocowinity over the weekend that wounded a 5-year-old girl.

According to a press release from the BCSO, Beaufort County Emergency Communications received a 911 call at about 2 p.m. Sunday reporting the child had been shot inside a residence at 12100 N.C. Highway 33 East, Chocowinity.

The press release did not indicate whether the gunfire came from inside or outside of the residence.

The release states that the child was transported to Vidant Beaufort Hospital and then Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where she was treated for a single gunshot wound. The latest report from the hospital listed the child in stable condition, according to the BCSO release.

Members of the Blount’s Creek Fire Department, Chocowinity EMS, Beaufort County EMS and the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. An investigation into the shooting is ongoing. The release indicated that the BCSO would offer no further comment Monday.
