Timothy M. McCaffrey, age 74, of Washington, died Dec. 20, 2019, at Vidant Hospital following a long battle against cancer and heart disease.

Tim lived a rich, full life, beginning with an excellent education, graduating from the University of Cincinnati. He joined the Marine Corps in 1965 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1966. Tim was the Commanding Officer of Fox Company 2/3-3 in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. He remained active duty until December 1973, leaving his dedicated military life with 14 combat-related decorations. He had many brothers in arms with whom he kept in contact, and he will be sorely missed. As a Captain Infantry Officer, he loved his Marine Corps associations.

Following his military career, Tim spent approximately 30 years in the medical device industry in San Diego, California, before retiring in 1990. In 2004, Tim and Lynn moved to Washington, where they refinished a historic district home in which they have lived for the past 15 years. He was raised in California, and in the course of his life, was well-travelled, living abroad a good portion of his life.

Tim lived life fully. He loved to cook and camp; Ocracoke was a favorite camping destination. He enjoyed shooting and tinkering with his hot rods and motorcycles. Tim was a champion of Christ, a true servant of the Lord, and never wavered in his Christian faith.

Preceding Tim in death are his mother and father, Joan and Charles McCaffrey, and brothers, Mark and CJ McCaffrey.

Tim is survived by his wife, Lynn, of Washington. Lynn served as Tim’s loving advocate and caretaker all his life, particularly in the past five years. Tim’s legacy is his three sons: Sean McCaffrey, of Tavares, Florida, Brian McCaffrey and his wife, Debbie, of Lewisville, North Carolina, and his stepson, Ryan Kimsey and his wife, Rica, of Virginia Beach. Tim was always proud of his “Boyos.” The relationships were always evolving, but Tim could not have been prouder nor loved more. He was devoted to his boys and prayed for them every day. He is survived by his sister, Maryelle Myers, of Sparks, Nevada; brothers, Michael McCaffrey, of Sparks, Nevada, Dennis McCaffrey, of Muskegon, Michigan, Greg McCaffrey, of Pioneer, California, and Tom McCaffrey, of Pine Grove, California, of whom Tim was so proud of. Also surviving Tim are five grandchildren.

A celebration of life memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6, 2020, at the Chapel of Washington Funeral and Cremation, with the Rev. Rick Carson officiating.

A reception for friends and family will follow the memorial service at the reception center of Washington Funeral and Cremation.
