But on Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge this American River Otter (Lutra canadensis lataxina) could be ringing one of the nearby romp (a name used to designate a group of otters). Otters can tread water and swim both backwards and forwards. They feed mainly on crayfish, crabs, amphibians and fish.
