A packed gym and homecoming festivities hosted two entertaining games on Thursday night as the Unity Christian Academy girls defeated Christ Covenant 48-36 and the boys won 58-40.

Freshman guard Meagan Jensen of the Lady Warriors started 4-for-4 from 3-point land in the first half, and gave Unity the juice they needed for the remainder of the game. She collected nine rebounds on the night to go along with her 14 points.

“It’s really cool getting into a rhythm like that. Some games you have it, some games you don’t, but when you do it feels great,” Jensen said. “I just want to continue helping the team win. I know if I’m not having a good game, then I can just pass it to my teammates.”

Unity Christian’s girls cruised to victory after a shaky first half. They dominated in the second half on the glass and with its suffocating defense.

Catherine Cutler picked up 10 points with seven rebounds and five steals. Shyanne Brokenborough had eight points and 10 rebounds. Paige Sawyer lit up the stat sheet with nine points, six rebounds, nine assists and four steals. Kipper Case had five assists to go along with her bucket, and Kirbi Case sank a three in the contest. Carly Harbridge also scored and grabbed four rebounds.

The Lady Warriors are now 12-0, and show no signs of slowing down under head coach Harvey Case. They returned to action on Friday night against Bethel Assembly Christian Academy.

The boys didn’t play its best first half, according to head coach Joey Craft, as they trailed by two points to Christ Covenant at the break.

“We weren’t playing our game. We were rushing, we weren’t playing good defense, weren’t boxing out and we turned the ball over too much. I told them we had to stop turning the ball over and be aggressive, because our press works when we all play together,” Craft said. “They worked a little better in the second half. We pulled back into a 2-3 zone and that really caused more turnovers than our press, surprisingly. We’re as good a team as anybody, really. We moved the really well in transition and that’s why we went on such a big run; rebounded a lot better too. I told them to rebound, don’t turn the ball over, play good defense and it’ll lead to the offense. It did in that second half.”

The Warriors turned the ball over 16 times in the contest, but the vast majority came in the first half. Unity settled down, drove the lane and finished at the rim in the second half leading to a 22-2 run in between the third and fourth quarters.

Colby Case led the Warriors in points with 22, and said he knew his team needed to get it going in the second half.

“We just weren’t getting back on defense (in the first half). Our press wasn’t working because we weren’t trapping and we weren’t pushing the ball up the floor like we should,” Case said. “We played better in the second half, we just can’t keep letting those things happen is the main thing.”

Jack Kirkman dropped 14 points and tallied 8 rebounds in the contest as well as six assists. Jeff Harris added eight, and Nick Jones picked up three en route the Warriors’ ninth win of the season.
