Deputy Josh Miller reported to Columbia aldermen on Jan. 6 that Tyrrell County sheriff’s officers responded to 407 law enforcement calls or complaints in town in December, up from 326 in November but fewer than the 489 calls in October.

Washington-Tyrrell Emergency Medical Service responded to 21 calls in town in December, 12 in November, and 25 in October.

And Tyrrell Volunteer Fire Department responded to three fires in Columbia in December, five in November, and four in October.

The report showed seven citations for motor vehicle violations issued inside the town in December: one expired registration, one inspection violation, and five speeding tickets ranging from 49 to 60 miles per hour in a 35-mph zone.

Also in the town in December officers conducted four investigations, issued a criminal summons for assault and battery, served a magistrate’s order for misdemeanor child abuse, served two orders for arrest for failure to pay fine and for probation violation, and served three warrants for communicating threats, misdemeanor larceny and trespassing, for failure to return rental property, and for harassing phone calls.

Deputies Sheppard and Miller drove 5,498 miles on duty inside Columbia during December.
