Shake off that winter slump

It’s been said of North Carolina weather, “If you don’t like it, wait five minutes.”
Up and down, hot and cold, all over the map — it’s the natural state of weather in the Tarheel State. From downright frigid a couple of weeks ago to unseasonably warm this week, we’re in the midst of one of winter’s good graces for at least the next week or so.
With temperatures topping out in the 60s and 70s, now is a great time to get out of the house and shake off those winter blues. Whether it’s going for a hike at Goose Creek State Park or a paddle on the Pamlico or Pungo, take the opportunity to do something outside while the warmth lasts.
It’s not only good for the soul, but can have positive effects on one’s mental health as well. A 2004 study from the University of Michigan shows that the impact of warm, sunny weather on one’s mind and mood are very real.
According to Science Daily, researchers found lingering outside for at least 30 minutes in warm conditions during winter, or at the onset of spring, can boost mood, memory and improve one’s creativity and openness to new information.
“Being outside in pleasant weather really offers a way to reset your mindset,” said Matthew Keller, one of the post-graduate students who conducted the study.
According to the same research, the optimal temperature for mood is right around the low 70s. But most people in industrialized nations spend more than 93% of their time indoors, leading them to miss out on the good mental boosters right outside their door.
“Life is full of color and life is fun,” Keller stated in the research. “It’s easy to forget that during the wintertime.”
So however you’ve spent the winter thus far, take advantage of the nice weather while it lasts. Get a solid dose of vitamin D, and see what it does for your mood.
Because if you wait too long, say five minutes, you might have missed out.
