2020 trends call for color and personality

Perhaps the paint on the walls needs a refresher, or maybe the color of those kitchen cabinets doesn’t seem quite right. It could be the tile of the backsplash looks a little dated or the living room seems like it’s lacking its past pizazz. If the remodeling project ideas are percolating in 2020, the options are limitless.

Interior design trends come and go. For years, kitchens trended toward light, airy spaces; interior paints ran the gamut of the neutral colors where color accents popped. A rustic, country look came in style — shiplap walls featuring prominently.

2020 brings a new thought to in-style interior design: not trendy is the new trend, and every home should reflect its owners unique personality, whether those design decisions are currently popular, or not.

With that thought in mind, there are design ideas that are gaining momentum in the new decade.

MORE COLOR

The pale palette of the past is now giving way to color, and lots of it. Whether it’s an accent wall that makes a statement contrasting against neutral surrounding walls or a rich, jewel-toned monochromatic room, color abounds. Color is also trending toward the warm: pink, peach and yellow; buttery leathers in warm shades of brown. Richer fabrics, such as velvet, in bold colors are finding their way onto furniture, and wallpaper and wall murals are also making a colorful splash.

THE RUSTIC, NATURAL LOOK

Natural materials such as bamboo, cork, re-purposed woods are to stay, but now the country rustic is giving way to a more old-world European style. Expect to see more plastered, or faux-plastered, walls, along with a mix of classic prints and antiques with newer décor, replacing the rustic house with a sleeker, more sophisticated country home.

GOING DARK

The light, neutral kitchens of the recent past are being transformed as designers embrace the concept of more color. Cabinets are going dark — dark gray, navy, black — while countertops and tile backsplashes are keeping the overall feel light. Backsplashes are also moving away from glass and subway tile, replaced by slabs of marble or granite. For those who won’t be giving up their white cabinets and countertops anytime soon, unexpected color pops in range hoods and ovens are making a presence in 2020.

STATEMENT DOORS

Interior doors rarely make a statement. The usual fare is white or natural colored wood. But in 2020, that’s changing, as designers are using doors to add that splash of color against the more neutral tones surrounding them. Painting the door to a room, any room, is a great way to add some unexpected color without having to commit to painting an entire room or accent wall.

POP OF COLOR: Interior doors are the new accent walls. The deep green of these interior doors adds a contrasting pop of color without the commitment of painting an entire room or wall.

INVESTMENT

Consumers across the board are looking at longer-term investments. Rather than bowing to furniture trends, and picking up a new piece of furniture just because it’s appealing, the mindset is trending instead toward investment in fewer, higher quality pieces, ones that speak to the owners lasting personal style.

A SOFTER LOOK: Peaches and pinks are back, as is wallpaper. Here, the unique accent of wallpaper on the ceilings adds subtle texture to a bedroom.
