Betty Cowen Mizelle

Mrs. Betty Cowen Mizelle, age 87, a resident of Washington, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2020, at River Trace Nursing Center of Washington.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, 2020, at Wesleyan Pentecostal Church in Washington, officiated by Pastor Daniel Woods. Burial will follow in Snowd Branch Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Daniel Bonner, Jacob Bonner, Jonathan Barnes, Michael Barnes, Matthew Barnes and Mike Connell. Windsor Griffin and Declan Griffin will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Mrs. Mizelle was born in Martin County on Dec. 18, 1932, daughter of the late Charlie Hendricks Cowen and the late Beulah Hattan Williams Cowen. In 1949, she married Charlie Bennett Mizelle who preceded her in death on Jan. 23, 2007.
Mrs. Mizelle dedicated her time to her family as a homemaker. Family was very important to her, and she loved sewing, gardening, studying family genealogy and making wedding cakes. She was a charter member of Wesleyan Pentecostal Church.
Survivors include her children, Sandra Gayle Jones (George), Charlie Bennett “Benny” Mizelle, all of Washington, Wanda Kay Edmondson (Mack), of Everetts, Karen Sue Bonner (Steve), of Washington, Joyce Bennette Buck (Britt), of Grimesland; a sister, Sybil Cowen Meeks, of Greensboro; a brother, Charles Hendricks Cowen III, of Graham; seven grandchildren, Melissa Boyette, Aimee Taylor, Brandi Griffin, Emily Connell, Daniel Bonner, Jacob Bonner and Claire Buck; eight great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Michael, Matthew, Windsor, Declan, Madelyn, Meredith, Lilah; and two great-great-grandchildren, Aiden and Rachel.
Mrs. Mizelle was predeceased along with her parents and husband by an infant son, Heber Nathan Mizelle; a sister, Doris Cowen Hill; and a grandson, Bryan Barnes.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, 2020, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory and other times at the home of her daughter Gayle Jones, located at 4271 Cherry Run Road, Washington.
