Rev. Reuben “Perry” Turner, 81, of Ernul, went home to be with The Lord on Feb. 11, 2020. He was born May 22, 1938, in Farmville, and was the second child of Jasper Perry Turner and Audrey Bishop Turner. He graduated from Plymouth High School, where he enjoyed playing in the band and attended East Carolina University.

Perry was very talented and enjoyed sharing that talent with others. In addition to painting several portraits, scenes and houses, he also loved restoring and driving his Model A’s and 1969 Ford pickup. His favorite pastime was spending precious time with his family and friends and, most importantly, sharing God’s Word.

He loved to sing, play his guitar, write songs and poems. Perry was in radio broadcasting for 17 years, Promotions Director of Target Records, spent some time in Nashville, Tennessee, and recorded several records. He had the privilege of directing, producing and acting for many years with Raleigh Theater, Goldsboro Playhouse, New Bern Civic Theater, Repertory Players and Twin Rivers Theater. He proudly served in the National Guard and served as Cub Scout Master of Cub Scout Pack 231.

He owned and operated his own masonry business for 20 years, which gave him and his family the opportunity to be a part of “The Lost Colony” for 10 years. He played five major roles, Simon Fernando, Old Tom, Governor White, Historian and Sir Walter Raleigh. His favorite, of course, was Old Tom. Perry also played a major role in “Worthy is the lamb;” his wife and two grandchildren, Bryan and Julie Branton, were also in the production.

Active in church all his life, Perry has served as Chairman of the Board, Sunday School Teacher, Youth Leader, Choir Member and Director, Deacon and Elder. In later years, he became an ordained Minister, attending Barton College and receiving his Bachelor of Christian Science from Christian Bible College and Seminary. Perry had the honor of serving Northview Baptist Christian Church (DOC at the time), Goldsboro, for 5 ½ years, Vanceboro Christian Church, Vanceboro, for 10 years, and First Christian Church, Elizabeth City, for 5 ½ years.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ann Hill Smith Turner; daughter, Susan T. Branton; sons, Perry Gray Turner Sr., Stephen J. Smith and Michael C. Smith (Teresa); grandchildren, Bryan H. Branton, Julie B. Broadway (Jamie), Perry G. Turner Jr., Brandon J. Smith (Dannielle), Christopher Smith, Tyler Smith (Kelsey), Chelsea Smith and Danielle S. Hawkins (Chris); great-grandchildren, Brooke Branton, Ashli Hitt, Chase Branton, Landon, Lucas, Logan and Layton Turner, Summer Broadway, Ensley Smith, and T. J. Becker; sister, Jean T. Beasley (Dale); nephew, Hal D. Beasley Jr. (Sharon); great-nephew, Hal D. Beasley III; and numerous cousins. Sadly, in addition to his parents, Perry was preceded in death by his son, Shelton J. Smith, and brother, Henry W. Turner.
