Mr. Carlos Ervin Manning, Sr., age 87, a resident of 9759 N.C. Highway 99 N., Pantego, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2020, at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, March 1, 2020, at Pike Road Church of Christ, officiated by Rodney Sawyer. Burial will follow in Davis Cemetery. Trey Manning, Zak Manning, Eddie Sulc, Geoffrey Furbee, Allen Manning and Charles Fletcher will serve as pallbearers. Members of Pungo Ruritan Club and Mr. Manning’s classmates will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, 2020, at Paul Funeral Home of Belhaven and other times at the home.
Mr. Manning was born in Beaufort County on April 21, 1932, son of the late Carlos Benjamin Manning and the late Ruby Belle Allen Manning. He was a 1950 graduate of Pantego High School and served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard. On March 1, 1954, he married the former Jacquelyn “Jackie” Respess who preceded him in death on Oct. 9, 2017. He was a member of Pike Road Church of Christ where he also served as an elder and deacon. He started his working career as a door-to-door mattress salesman, worked at the Ford Plant in Norfolk, Virginia, for one summer and a short period for Weyerhaeuser in Plymouth. At that point, Mr. Manning chose to go back home to his roots and provided for his family by farming and becoming the owner/operator of Manning Farms. His sons followed in his footsteps and manage the family farm today.
In 1956, he served on the board of the Pungo River Drainage District where he was a former commissioner and was still a member. He was a member of the Pungo Ruritan Club and was the last living charter member. Mr. Manning was a past board member of the Ag Carolina Farm Credit. He was instrumental in locating a branch of Southern Bank in Belhaven and served on the Advisory Board.
Survivors include two sons, Buster Manning (Susan) and Maurice Manning (Teresa), both of Pantego; a daughter, Monica Manning, of Bethel; a sister, Diane Manning Tippett, of Nashville, Tennessee; five grandchildren, Neil Manning (Carrie), Melissa Pledger (Eric), Angela Berben (Jason), Trey Manning (Ashley) and Zak Manning (Taylor); and nine great-grandchildren.
