Mrs. Lennie Marie Smith Halstead, 92, of Ayden, passed away Saturday, March 14, 2020.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Timothy Christian Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Halstead, daughter of the late Jesse and Lorena Buck Smith, was a native and lifelong Pitt County resident. She was the oldest member of Timothy Christian Church. She farmed for much of her life and was one of the first female members of the Gardnervillle Volunteer Fire Department.
She was known as the cook of the community — her fiesta cake was legendary and brought many a dollar to fundraising efforts. Often called ‘Honey,’ she delivered food to the sick and was loved by everyone and will be missed by all. She dearly loved her family; the great-grandchildren were very special to her.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Asa Halstead, and son, Robert Asa Halstead Jr.
She is survived by: daughters, Linda H. Dixon and husband Wayne, of Black Jack, and Trudy E. Halstead and Pete (Grannie’s favorite puppy), of Ayden; daughter-in-law, Barbara M. Halstead, of Ayden; seven grandchildren, Anthony W. Dixon and wife Harriet; Ashley G. Sumerlin and wife Jaime, Gina H. Stepps and husband John, Wendy D. Guidi and husband Raymond, Brian R. Sumerlin and wife Shawna, Kelley H. Humbles and husband Ashley, Casey L. Sumerlin and wife Jennifer; 17 great-grandchildren; siblings, Sherline Tripp, Bobby Smith and wife Betty Lou, Sue Morris and Ann Malan and husband Lynn.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Timothy Christian Church, 9657 County Home Road, Ayden 28513.
