From the Town of Columbia
COLUMBIA — The Town of Columbia reports the by-pass of partially treated wastewater at the Columbia Waste Water Treatment Plant, located at 604 N. Road Street Extension, Columbia. The discharge at the WWTP occurred early Monday evening, April 6, and is estimated to have released 4,000 gals. Although the discharge was confined to the WWTP property, it may eventually enter the Scuppernong River by way of neighboring farmland, swamp land and an unnamed canal that empties into the river.
Town officials explained that the discharge occurred when a back-up generator failed to come on when power was lost during a thunderstorm.
For information contact Rhett White, Manager, Town of Columbia, 103 Main Street 252-796-2781.
Clean-up and remediation efforts are underway by Town employees.
