BELHAVEN — The Belhaven Police Department is investing a shooting on George Street that took place early last Friday morning.
“Sometime around 1:45 a.m. on Friday, a call was received of gunshots in the northern section of Belhaven,” said BPD Chief Fred Clingenpeel. “Officers got into the area of Gum and George (streets) and realized the incident was probably on George Street.”
Clingenpeel says officers found an abandoned vehicle on George Street, and one person injured by what appeared to be a small-caliber firearm. The victim was transported to the Vidant Multispecialty Clinic in Belhaven before being airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, according to Clingenpeel. The chief said his office has been in contact with the victim, who is expected to survive.
“We don’t think the public at large is in any danger,” Clingenpeel said.
So far, no arrests have been made in the case, and the investigation is ongoing, according to Clingenpeel. Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to contact the Belhaven Police Department at 252-943-2242.
