Mrs. Thelma Gray Cox Cooper, age 94, a resident of Belhaven, died Thursday, May 28, 2020, peacefully at her home, surrounded by family and loved ones.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30, 2020, at Davis Cemetery and will be officiated by James Scheffler. Pallbearers will be Danny Marslender, Robin Cooper, Eric Cooper, Wade Cooper, Dale Davis, Mark Cooper Jr. and Bryant Cooper. Honorary pallbearers will be Mrs. Cooper’s remaining grandchildren.

Mrs. Cooper was born in Hyde County on Sept. 13, 1925, to the late Stanley Cox and Ida Blake Cox. On Oct. 30, 1946, she married Julius Arthur Cooper, who preceded her in death on Aug. 24, 2013. She was the co-owner and operator with her husband of Thel’s Shop in Belhaven. Mrs. Cooper was a member of West Belhaven Church of Christ.

Survivors include her children, Diane Marslender, of Belhaven, Gail Marks and husband Bryant, of Avon, Debbie Steadman, of Belhaven, Gerry Cooper, of Belhaven, Terry Cooper and wife Pat, of Belhaven, Vann Cooper and wife Debbie, of Washington, Glenn Cooper, of Belhaven, Reid Cooper and wife Jenna, of Belhaven; 21 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by a son, Mark Cooper; two sons-in-law, Larry D. Davis and Timothy Steadman; two brothers and four sisters.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30, 2020, at West Belhaven Church of Christ.
