Chants of “I can’t breathe!” and “No justice, no peace” could be heard on the Washington waterfront as protesters gathered for the “Together We Rise” event.

Officers and deputies with the Washington Police Department and Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office looked on as protesters, many bearing signs, marched from the western end of the waterfront to Harding Square at the base of Market Street, where many laid facedown in the street for eight minutes, the amount of time a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on the neck of George Floyd last week, resulting in Floyd’s death and sparking nationwide protests.

Described as a peaceful protest laden with righteous anger, the crowd marched back down Stewart Parkway.
