A group of Washington residents have been taking part in protest against racial injustice throughout the afternoon, into the evening, according to local police.

Washington Police and Fire Services Director Stacy Drakeford said the group has been traveling through the North Market Street neighborhood, from about Fifth Street to Ninth Street.

“It is a peaceful protest,” Drakeford said. “All they’re doing is just walking up the street.”

Drakeford said police are monitoring the situation.

The protest is one of thousands taking place across the country, as thousands have taken to the streets to protest racial injustice and the death last week of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man killed by a white Minneapolis police officer who kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes. A similar protest took place on Monday on the Washington waterfront.
