Some Beaufort County residents will remain without electricity until at least Wednesday as power crews suspended operations at nightfall Tuesday.

According to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, approximately 4,949 Beaufort County customers were without power going into the evening. Totals are likely less than that however, as those numbers do not represent the restoration of approximately 1,300 outages in Belhaven, and progress made by Washington

With crews ceasing work at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Tideland EMC reported 1,137 members fed by the Pantego, Sidney and Edward substations still without power in Beaufort County. The heaviest damage for the co-op was in the Bayview and Crystal Beach areas, where a tornado may have touched down Tuesday morning. Work is expected to resume around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Duke Energy, meanwhile, reported 114 customers without power, with estimated restoration times sometime before 11 p.m. Wednesday.

According to a Tuesday evening update from the City of Washington, crews worked until nightfall and planned to resume repairs early Wednesday morning. 2,000 Washington Electric Utilities customers were without power as of 4:51 p.m. Tuesday. An evening update from the Town of Belhaven said that all the town’s electric customers were back online.
