HYDE COUNTY — For the first nine weeks of the fall semester, Hyde County Schools will operate under a system of remote learning both at Ocracoke School and Mattamuskeet School campuses, echoing many school districts across the state and region.

“After a thorough planning process where all stakeholders had different opportunities to provide opinions and feedback, followed by a presentation of said plans at the last special called board meeting, the board of education unanimously voted to reopen our mainland and island campuses under Plan C (remote learning) for the first nine weeks of school,” wrote HCS Public Information Officer Julio Morales.

While the Mattamuskeet Early College High School starts back this week, the rest of Hyde County’s students will begin online classes Aug. 17.

Both schools will hold open houses this week to allow families to pick up laptops and wireless hotspots, fill out first day paper work and pick up supplies needed for the semester. At both Mattamuskeet Elementary and Mattamuskeet Early College High School, open house will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday for students with last names A through L, and then the same hours for last names M through Z on Friday.

Students at the Ocracoke School will have open house for middle school students from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, followed by open house for high school students from noon to 4 p.m. Pre-K and first grade students will have open house from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Friday, followed by second through fifth graders from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those who cannot make their session can also visit the school from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday.
