New, confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Beaufort County numbered five on Monday, hitting the 1,000-case benchmark. There are now 244 active cases in the county, 12 people are hospitalized, according to the Monday update from Beaufort County Emergency Services and Beaufort County Health Department.

According to the update, 739 of the 1,000 total positive cases have recovered from the virus; 17 Beaufort County residents have died — seven of those in the space of six days in mid-August, five between Sept. 10 and Sept. 17, and another two are still under investigation.

All active cases are self-isolating, the update reads.

The total number of cases that have been confirmed in the U.S. rose from 6,705,114 Sunday to 6,829,956 Monday; these numbers include 2,590,695 people in the U.S. presumed recovered from COVID-19. The U.S. has the highest total number of cases worldwide; worldwide, there have been 31,175,205 confirmed cases. Nationwide, 199,690 deaths have been attributed to the virus, an increase of 209 overnight.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in North Carolina continued to rise from 190,973 Sunday to 194,355 Monday. There have been 3,247 deaths in the state attributed to the virus, an increase of four overnight. The state currently has 885 COVID-19 associated hospitalizations and 176,422 people are presumed recovered from the virus in North Carolina.

Eastern North Carolina counties total COVID-19 cases as of Monday numbered (does not include number of recovered): Bertie (553), Beaufort (1,000), Bladen (821), Brunswick (1,535), Carteret (615), Camden (109), Chowan (313), Columbus (1,312), Craven (1,287), Currituck (166); Dare (264), Duplin (2,140), Edgecombe (1,279), Gates (127), Greene (505), Halifax (964), Hertford (693), Hyde (124), Jones (144), Lenoir (939), Martin (420), New Hanover (3,914), Northampton (407), Onslow (1,859), Pamlico (233), Pasquotank (677), Pender (904), Perquimans (177), Pitt (4,572), Sampson (1,766), Tyrrell (112), Washington (200), Wayne (3,165) and Wilson (2,094). Guildford (8,157), Mecklenburg (27,586) and Wake (16,943) counties have the most cases in North Carolina.

There had been 14,895 tests completed in Beaufort County as of Monday, with 13,711 negatives, 991 positives and 193 pending. These are cumulative numbers and include tests performed at the health department and reporting private medical facilities through the county. Nine of Beaufort County’s cases were tested in other counties but are Beaufort County residents.

The update reminded county residents to “practice the Three W’s:” wear face coverings, wait six feet apart and wash your hands often.
