Several businesses came together on Wednesday to make sure that local families could have turkey and beverages on their tables for Thanksgiving dinner.
Volunteers distributed 100 turkeys and bottles of Coca-Cola Wednesday afternoon during a drive-thru giveaway presented by local nonprofit Helping One Person Excel (HOPE). Coca-Cola, Wilson’s Cleaning Mobile Service, Rutledge Mini Storage, Engraver’s World and Apparel, Warehouse Tire and Battery Sales, and Boston’s Bail Bonds sponsored the event.
The giveaway was scheduled to start at 3 p.m., but organizer Tyrone Wilson said cars were lining up an hour before then. Most of the items were distributed at the giveaway site, the parking lot outside of the Coca-Cola Building located at 909 W. Fifth St. in Washington, and volunteers delivered turkeys to a couple of homes as well.
“It’s about giving,” said Tony Boston, one of the volunteers. “For people to stop by here and tell us thank you, and they appreciate it with smiles on their face, it makes us happy.”
“Priceless,” Wilson added. “Whenever we see a need, we always come out here and give it.”
Wilson said the group wants to hold a similar event around Christmas time.
