As the cold weather continues outside our homes, many of us are seeking ways to incorporate some warmth and cheerfulness to tide us over until spring is here again. One of the best ways to achieve this is the incorporation of flowers and foliage.
Flowers, both fresh cut and artificial, can lend a cheerful touch to your home during any season.
“Very few people come into the shop and have specific flowers that they have in mind. Most of the time, it’s mixed arrangements that focus on color and smell,” said Jessica Long-Mills of The Flower Spot in Chocowinity.
Mixed arrangements can include a variety of flowers and colors to brighten up your space. Popular colors for winter arrangements include any and all shades of blue, white and red mixed with different sprigs of greenery to balance out the bouquet.
While looks are important, some flowers are very fragrant. Consider avoiding flowers like Lillies that have a strong smell if you are particularly sensitive to smell and picking something with a lighter fragrance like roses.
“You can never go wrong with roses,” said Long-Mills.
Specific scents of flowers can be beneficial as well. More potent smelling sprigs of eucalyptus are especially popular during the winter months since it can help open up airways and improve airflow during some of the stuffier months.
If you aren’t particularly gifted when it comes to caring for plants or preserving your fresh cuts for as long as possible, artificial flower arrangements can be a great option. Artificial flowers and can liven up your home without introducing any allergens. They are long lasting and require no upkeep other than dusting every now and then.
For those more interested in greenery, hearty live plants and simple artificial arrangements can brighten up any space.
Snake plants require very little maintenance and can survive throughout the winter with just one or two waterings over the colder months. It is very durable and difficult to kill, especially since it can handle lower temperatures and humidities.
Another common houseplant is english ivy. This plant is considered an invasive species and should be kept in the home to prevent damaging your natural biome. These plants are very hearty and require moist soil and light to be happy. Make sure you remain vigilant when attending to these plants, as they are considered poisonous to humans and can cause some unpleasant side effects.
Artificial versions of snake plants and english ivy, as well as many other plants like succulents and cacti, can provide great alternatives to anyone with little time on their hands. Your home will be brighter with the addition of any greenery, and whether real or artificial, make sure you choose the best option for you and your household.
