Today the FDA and CDC have recommended halting the administration of the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine.
More than 6.8 million doses of the J&J vaccine have been administered in the US and there were 6 reported cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot in individuals after receiving the J&J vaccine. All 6 cases occurred among women between the ages of 18 and 48, and symptoms occurred 6 to 13 days after vaccination.
The CDC will convene a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) on Wednesday April 14th. This meeting will further review these cases and assess their potential significance. The FDA will then review that analysis and make appropriate recommendations.
Beaufort County Health Department will not be administering J&J vaccines until this review is complete. We will continue to monitor this process and update the public continuously.
