Optimist Club awards scholarships

The Optimist Club of Washington recently awarded four $1,500 scholarships to local high school seniors. The Optimist Club Scholarships are awarded to students who have played school sports and have volunteered in their community helping others. Patty Peebles, president of the Optimist Club presented each student with their check, a certificate and an Optimist Club insulated cup at a dinner on May 20 at King Chicken in Washington.
The Buddy Baker Optimist Scholarship was presented to Liam Peebles. Liam is a senior at Harnett Central High School. He is the son of William and Tara Peebles. Liam will be attending Wake Technical College and North Carolina State University where he is accepted in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
The Youth Appreciation Scholarship was awarded to Sarah Petty. Sarah is the daughter of Jay and Tina Petty and a senior at Southside High School. She will be attending Liberty University studying sign language and youth ministry.
The Earl Mitchell Scholarship was awarded to Kelly Adams, a senior at Washington High School. Kelly is the daughter of Ken and Jessica Adams. She is a senior at Washington High School and will be attending East Carolina University in their Honors College and will major in business with a goal to work in the athletics department.
The Linley Gibbs Optimist Scholarship was awarded to Rebecca Zerniak, a senior at Washington High School. Rebecca is the daughter of Walt and Shannon Zerniak. She will be attending North Carolina State University.
