Literacy Volunteers of Beaufort County recently received a $2,400 check from the Christians in Action group of First Christian Church to help remedy its financial crisis.
The funds will be used for operational expenses. Literacy Volunteers provides free tutoring to adults who need to improve their skills in reading, writing, speaking and math. Some of their services are in helping to pass the GED (high school equivalency), Career Readiness Certificate, Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery and other workforce applications.
Christians In Action is an outreach ministry at First Christian Church. The group helps provide a means for persons, experiencing hardship or devastation through fire or flood can improve their situation through the donation of furniture, household, and clothing items. The ministry also provides assistance to local groups. Donations from the community of clothing and household items help the group raise funds from weekly yard sales (Wednesdays from 4:30-5:30 p.m.) for the purchase of new beds for their clients and support for other local groups such as Literacy Volunteers.
