The last official weekend of summer means more boats on the water. Wildlife law enforcement officers will begin an increased number of safety checks at recreational areas across the state starting Sept. 3 as part of its On the Road, On the Water campaign over Labor Day weekend. Please designate a sober boat operator and make sure everyone has a life jacket for an enjoyable and safe experience for all.
What to expect at a boating safety check:
- The wildlife officer will ask to see a lifejacket for everyone on board and will make sure each one is the proper size.
- They will make sure there is a fire extinguisher on board and will check the gauge to make sure it is properly charged.
- They will ask to see a throwable device, such as a Type 4 ring buoy or square
- They will ask to see the vessel registration and boater safety card.
