The Literacy Volunteers of Beaufort County recently announced the cancelation of its 20th anniversary party scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 3, due to COVID-19 concerns. The nonprofit also postponed its Car/Game Fundraiser scheduled for Oct. 29.
“We extend our thanks to the 10 members of the original Steering Committee, nine original tutors, six Board Presidents, and seven Program Managers who have guided the program so far,” a statement from Literacy Volunteers reads. “We especially want to thank our tutors and board members, past and present who gave of their time and talents to help improve the lives of our students. You made a difference!”
Literacy Volunteers, which earlier this year weathered a financial crisis with the help of community support, is looking for volunteers to spend 90 minutes a week helping students improve their reading, writing, speaking or math skills. Volunteers go through a 15-hour training program, which is available online, in-person or in a hybrid format. If interested, call Pam Deese at 252-974-1812 or visit the Literacy Volunteers office at 113 East 15th Street in Washington.
