After three years at Unity Christian, Shyanne Buck decided to transfer to Northside for her senior season. She’s a volleyball outside hitter, a basketball post player and a softball first/third baseman. So far, so good as the Panthers volleyball team is 9-1 and ranked second in the East among 1A teams.
- Why did you decide to leave Unity Christian?
Shyanne: I miss my school friends, but I also missed my point guard, Paige Sawyer, who transferred here to Northside last year. We’ve played together for a long time and my goal is to play college basketball, so Northside is the right spot for me for my senior year.
- What makes Paige so much fun to play with?
Shyanne: She just makes everybody better, if it’s basketball or volleyball. I’m tall (6’2 and a half) so I play down low. Paige knows how to get the ball to me and when I’m not open, she knows who is. She’s a great volleyball setter and sets me up perfectly for a kill. She has a knack for making the offense flow, no matter the sport.
- Which sport would you pick if you could only play one?
Shyanne: Basketball, because I’m hoping it will be my sport in college. UNC Wilmington has offered me (a scholarship) along with a couple other small schools, but I’m keeping my recruitment open for now. I also like the physical contact aspect of basketball. It’s an adrenaline rush and helps keep my temper in check.
- When did you start playing sports?
Shyanne: My family moved to Washington from Hanover, Va., which is about 45 minutes from Richmond, when I was 10. My mom signed me up for the Washington Youth Basketball League so I could make friends and I’ve been playing ever since.
- What do you do when you are not playing a sport?
Shyanne: I work at Parley’s Sip & Steam in Washington and I like to ride my horse, whose name is Aubrey. I also like to hang out with my friends and listen to Morgan Wallen who is a country singer.
