The Washington High School doubles team of senior Olivia Paszt and junior Katherine Pollock head to Holly Springs for Friday’s 2A state tournament after finishing second last weekend in the East regional in Snow Hill.
There are 16 duos competing, split into four pods in the single elimination tournament. Paszt/Pollock are the second seed in their pod and will face number three Samantha Levine/Lauren McClure of Raleigh Charter Friday at 9 a.m. on the Ting Park courts.
“We are just glad it’s not Greene Central again,” Paszt said. “We played them there (in Snow Hill) in the regular season, conference tournament and last week in the regional. It will fun to face different competition in a nice setting. We know that we are done if we lose, so we’ll be warmed up and ready from the start.”
Paszt and Pollock play softball for the Pam Pack and are summer travel league teammates. They think the early start might give them an advantage.
“Nine is prime time for us,” Pollock said. “Some of our softball tournaments start at seven, so starting then is perfect. We love to play early and hopefully will use it to our advantage.”
The pair advanced with victories over Edenton Holmes and North Johnston opponents, then had to battle back against a Greene Central duo in Saturday’s semi-final after being down four match points.
“We stayed together and never gave up,” Pollock said. “We communicate really well and always know who has the next shot. We feel like we can compete with anybody and it will be a fun experience.”
