Washington High School’s boys cross country team qualified for next weekend’s 2A state meet for the first time in 24 years with a second place finish behind host South Lenoir in Saturday’s East regional in Deep Run.
Freshman Braden Smithwick finished fifth overall, covering the 5K course in 17:26. Senior Isaac Campbell was seventh in 17:52, while freshman Micah Whitely was 18th in 8:53.
“Everybody set their personal record today and I am very proud that we qualified as a team,” coach Dawn Landen said. “They were very excited to get their hands on that trophy. Our girls also ran well and I’m proud of Hailey (Broadwell) for making it back to state.”
The girls finished sixth behind first place Camden County. Broadwell, a sophomore, finished 17th overall in 22:30. Freshmen Reagan Fisher (21st) and Jessica Conner (26th) finished in the top 30.
There were 17 schools competing in each race. The 2A state meet is Saturday at the Ivey Redman Sports Complex in Kernersville.
