Harriette Dell Matthews
Baby Dell, as she was affectionately called all her life, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 12, 2021. A long-term resident of the Grantsbrook Nursing & Rehab; Baby Dell previously lived in Hickory Point, NC. Born July 9, 1933. She was a member of the White Hill Free Will Baptist Church.
Ms. Matthews is survived by her sister, Marie Gaskins of Ayden, NC; her brother, Frederick R. Alfred of Ocean Isle Beach, NC. Other survivors include nieces, Susan Gorton, Deborah Leggett, Betty Mackinson and Marta Whichard; nephews, Gray Gaskins and Fred Alfred; and numerous other great nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents Halstead B. Alfred and Josephine Baily Alfred and a sister, June Bryan Alfred Knaup.
Although she had no children, she loved her “adoptive family”, Tim and Kelley Mathews and their children. Tim, Kelley and children fulfilled her life with love and joy as they faithfully watched over her when her health began to fail, as did her niece, Susan Gorton. She loved Susan so very much. She also loved Terry, her cat.
Baby Dell, a graduate of Aurora High School, where she excelled in basketball, was employed many years by DuPont in Kinston, NC.
The family sincerely appreciates the loving care given by the staff at Grantsbrook Nursting & Rehab.
Donations may be made to the nursing home or to your favorite pet organization or fire department.A graveside service will be held at White Hill Free Will Baptist Cemetery on Friday, December 17, 2021 at 3:00 p.m.
