The Kiwanis Club of Washington has awarded a $1,500 scholarship to a Washington High School Key Club senior. Ridge McRae Zerniak was honored at a recent Kiwanis Club luncheon meeting along with his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Walt Zerniak.
Ridge, a recent graduate of Washington High School, told club members of his plans to attend North Carolina State University and pursue a degree in bioelectrical engineering. During high school, he was active in the Kiwanis- sponsored Key Club, volunteering in a tutoring program at John Cotton Tayloe Elementary School along with other Key Club activities.
He participated in high school sports including football, basketball, soccer and golf and was a referee for the local summer soccer league. Ridge was appointed to participate in the North Carolina House of Representatives Page Program.
Funding for the scholarships and other club projects comes from community activities including, most recently, the Kiwanis Golf Ball Drop and the annual City of Washington/Kiwanis Christmas Parade.
The Kiwanis Club of Washington meets each Tuesday for lunch at King Chicken on Carolina Avenue, Washington. The club welcomes prospective members who have an interest in service to the community.
