Southside opened the Coastal Plains 1A conference season with a 22-8 victory at Pamlico County in the Fossil Bowl rivalry game, thanks in large part to senior Darren (DJ) Joyner, while Northside and Washington suffered road defeats. Pungo Christian had the week off.
- Darren (DJ) Joyner: The senior running back scored all three touchdowns in the Seahawks 22-8 win at Pamlico County. Joyner scored on runs of 10 and 12 yards and hauled in a 48-yard touchdown pass from Walker Hill to account for all the touchdown as the Seahawks (4-2) reclaimed the Fossil Bowl over the Hurricanes.
- Josh Gordon-The Washington High School junior provided most of the offense in the Pam Pack’s 45-12 loss at Farmville Central. He scored both touchdowns and ran for 122 yards on 21 carries.
- Jamie Corprew-The Northside junior fullback gained 116 yards in the Panthers 29-22 loss at East Carteret. He has 536 yards rushing in six games.
Best of the rest: Northside: Marcus Clayton and Carson Clinkscales scored rushing touchdowns at East Carteret. Defensive lineman Elijah Holloway blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown. Max Vansant intercepted a pass after Landon Buck deflected it.
Southside: Manvonte Deloach intercepted a pass and had five tackles, including one for a loss in the Pamlico County win. Hunter Rowe also intercepted a pass and Tequon (Tater) Moore had four tackles, including two for a loss. Fullback Brian Salinas carried 15 times for 47 yards and quarterback Walker Hill was 2-5 for 60 yards and a touchdown.
Washington: Sophomore linebacker Gabe Davis led the defense with 12 tackles against Farmville Central, while junior lineman Dashawn Smith had four tackles for loss and recovered a fumble.
Next up: Northside (3-3) hosts Southside (4-2) in the Anchor Bowl, Washington (2-4) hosts Greene Central (7-0) and Pungo Christian (2-3) entertains Halifax Academy (1-4) in 8-man action.
