The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office is deploying community-based security cameras in areas of high-call volume, including a mobile home park just outside Washington, the location of an active murder investigation following a shooting last weekend.
Cameras in place at Rivercreek Mobile Home Park and Old River Road in Pitt County will help deter crime and assist investigators in solving major crimes, according to a statement from Sgt. Lee Darnell of the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office.
“The use of modern technology in the prevention, detection, and solving of crime, along with more traditional methods, is important for keeping the citizens of Pitt County safe,” according to the release. “Sheriff Paula Dance plans to expand the program to place more cameras in other areas of the county.”
The cameras will record 24-hours a day and are mounted to existing poles.
“The camera placement and imaging are designed to protect individual homeowner privacy while maximizing coverage of public properties and roadways for safety,” according to the Sheriff’s department.
Pitt County deputies responded to a call of a shooting near Linda Drive and Rivercreek Drive in the Rivercreek Mobile Home Park on Oct. 2 and discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds.
Au’Mau’Vion Shiy’Trell Watford, 28, of Windsor was found dead at the scene.
His brother, 29-year-old Auviaughne Shakinge Watford of Williamston, was transported by ambulance to ECU Health.
