The Down East Seniors Club held their Nov. 30 meeting at the Blind
Center of NC in Washington. President Roy Whichard led the meeting.
Jim Hackney played for the singing of “God Bless America” and the
group pledged allegiance to the flag. Polk Culpepper gave the opening
prayer and Hackney provided factoids for the date in history.
Hodges Hackney introduced Stephen Farrell as the speaker. Farrell is
in charge of the archives in the History Room at Brown Library in
Washington. He is currently entering local historical documents and
photos in the PastPerfect online archive. Many of the historical
photos came from the collection of the late Bea Morton. An example of
the information in the archive is a detailed story about a prominent
local family in the 1800s, the Gallaghers. The father was a pharmacist
and the three sons were doctors. Farrell would like to see a museum
opened downtown to display historical artifacts and photos and house
document archives.
Bobby Roberson won the 50/50 drawing.
Speaker for the December 7 meeting will be Kelly Ange with the
Shepard Cancer Center.
