The Down East Seniors Club held their December 7 meeting at the Blind
Center of NC in Washington. President Roy Whichard led the meeting.
Jim Hackney played for the singing of “God Bless America” and the
group pledged allegiance to the flag. Charles Smith gave the opening
prayer and Hackney provided factoids for the date in history.
Hackney introduced Kelly Ange as the speaker. Ange is the Community
Health Coordinator for Health Improvement at ECU Health Beaufort
Hospital. She specializes in health education for Beaufort and Hyde
counties. The Shepard Cancer Center Foundation and ECU Health
partnered to purchase and outfit a 35-foot motor coach to provide free
health and cancer screenings in the two-county area. They concentrate
on general health screening as well as breast and skin cancer
screening for those without health insurance or who have difficulty
accessing a doctor. They also provide education on healthy living. In
the year the coach has been in use, it has attended 50 events and
screened 935 people.
Tom Meeks won the 50/50 drawing.
Speaker for the December 14 meeting will be Keith Hudson with the
Pamlico Business Resource Center.
The Down East Seniors Club is a group of older men in the Washington
area who meet for fellowship and an interesting program Wednesdays
from 10:00-11:00 a.m. and make contributions to local charities.
