Mr. James Elbert Cherry, age 86, a resident of Gallberry Road, Washington, died Sunday, January 8, 2023, at ECU Health Beaufort Hospital in Washington.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM Saturday, January 14, 2023, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington.

Mr. Cherry was born in Beaufort County on March 1, 1936.  He was the son of the late Henry Churchill Cherry and Violet Perry Cherry.  Mr. Cherry served in the U.S. Navy.  He was an over the road truck driver, retiring with 42 years of service.  Mr. Cherry lived in Chicago until 1984 when he returned to Washington.  In his spare time, he enjoyed working in his yard.

On October 11, 1958, Mr. Cherry married the former Margaret Marie Romozzi, who survives.

Surviving with this wife are his children, Theresa Ortiz W. Cherry (Renee) of Washington; five grandchildren, Amanda Rivera (Angel), Jaquie Moriarty, Krystal Larson, Morgan Cherry, Austin Cherry; and six great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Cherry was preceded in death by a daughter, Suzanne Larson, brother, William Edward Cherry and a sister, Mary Alice Olmstead.
