Dona Mae Whitley Apple, age 82, a resident of Washington, NC died Wednesday February 8, 2023, at ECU Health Inpatient Hospice in Greenville, NC.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 PM on Friday February 10, 2023, in the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington and will be officiated by Pastor Danny Robertson. Burial followed in Oakdale Cemetery. William Hamilton, Warren Hamilton, Micah Medlin, Ayden Hamilton, Marley Medlin, and Will Whitley served as pallbearers.

Mrs. Apple was born in Beaufort County on January 9, 1941, to the late Robert Wilbur Whitley and Beatrice Burbage Whitley. She worked as an insurance agent for 20 years and always treated her clients well. Her grandchildren would ride along with her on her insurance route. Mrs. Apple was a member of numerous insurance organizations. She worked first with Clarence Carawan and later with Polly Williamson at American General where she retired after 20 years. Mrs. Apple played piano for her brothers, Guy Whitley and Robert Whitley, and with Tony Krantz at nursing homes and for church choirs. She worked with River City Christian Center Children’s Ministry. Mrs. Apple was close with her Bath High School Classmates. She loved gardening and being with her family.

Survivors include her daughter, Teresa Sullivan Hamilton and husband Charles of Washington, a son, Douglas Ray Sullivan of Washington, five grandchildren, William Hamilton and wife Heather, Joni Medlin and husband Micah, Kathryn Hamilton Potter and husband Jason, Jessica Sullivan, Warren Hamilton and wife Natalie, nine great grandchildren, Ayden Hamilton, Marley Medlin, Liza Medlin, Madison Latham, Miles Medlin, Andrew Hamilton, Wesley Hamilton, Jaxson Potter, Jordan Potter, two sisters-in-law, Audrey Whitley, and Grace Ann Whitley.

She is preceded in death by her husband Thomas Franklin Apple, and three brothers, Robert Wilbur Whitley, II, Thomas Wells Whitley, and Guy Burbage Whitley.

The family received friends Thursday February 9, 2023, from 5:30 PM until 7:30 PM at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington and other times at her home.
