Mr. Samuel Milton “Curly” Smith, Sr., age 87, a resident of Washington, died Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at ECU Health Beaufort Hospital in Washington.
A memorial service will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, February 19, 2023, at First Baptist Church. The family will greet friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Mr. Smith was born in Beaufort County on April 21, 1935. He was the son of the late Hyman L. Smith and Thelma Evans Smith Whitley. Mr. Smith graduated from Chocowinity High School in 1953. He worked at Evans Seafood Company for over 30 years. Later, he opened Warehouse Tire & Battery and operated it until he retired. Mr. Smith was a former deacon and Sunday school teacher, a member at Washington Yacht and Country Club and the Cypress Landing Golf Club. He was an avid golfer and coached baseball in both Little League and Babe Ruth Leagues.
On December 21, 1956, Mr. Smith married the former Evelyn Brooks, who survives.
Surviving with his wife are his son, Samuel “Sammy” Milton Smith, Jr. of Greenville, NC; daughter, Renée Smith Norton and husband, Carter of Richmond, VA; granddaughter, Caroline Phillips Norton; grandson, Samuel Maxwell Norton; brother, Gerald Smith of Jacksonville, NC; five sisters, Doris Sparrow of Atlantic Beach, NC, Nellie Williams of New Bern, NC, Mable Howell of Cary, NC, Glynda Crousore of Kokomo, IN and Janet Faccinto of Baxter, TN; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by five brothers, Chuck “Ivey” Savant, Hyman Smith, Jr., Al Smith, Dallas Smith, Mickey Smith; and three sisters, Virginia Evans, Edna Ewing, and Evelyn Smith.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 113 North Harvey Street, Washington, N.C. 27889, or the charity of one’s choice.
