Another member of Washington High School’s 2A state runner-up softball team will continue her career in college.
Senior third-baseman/pitcher Erin Everett committed to Pitt Community College to play next season.
She joins graduate Laci Campbell (Virginia Wesylan) and teammate Ava Mizell (Chowan University) as members of the East championship squad who will play on the next level.
Everett cites new PCC coach Amy Gardner as the deciding factor.
“She has known me since I was nine and was my pitching coach growing up,” Everett said. “We always worked really well together and she helped me learn the game. I’m excited to be part of her team next spring, but I’m also looking forward to the season that’s starting soon.”
Everett hit .277 for the Pack, who went 28-2 last spring, with both losses to West Stanly in the title series in Chapel Hill. She had 23 hits, including four doubles, drove in 12 runs and scored 13 times, while handling 46 chances at third base without an error.”
“She has been an outstanding third baseman for us,” WHS coach Brad Horton said. “She anticipates the bunt every well, understands what the infield is supposed to do in certain situations and communicates those responsibilities very well to her teammates. She works hard on her own to improve and helped Emma (Orr, a freshman) adapt to pitching in high school.”
Gardner, the former athletic director at the Oakwood School in Greenville plans on using Everett at multiple positions once she arrives.
“I think she can play about anywhere on the field,” Gardner said. “She will find her spot once she gets here. I think Erin will develop into a strong leader and will be one of the building blocks for our program.”
