High temperatures recorded in Washington set new records Wednesday and Thursday this week, but the trend isn’t expected to continue into the weekend.

Record-breaking highs were observed at the Warren Field Station with temperatures of 82 degrees on Wednesday and 85 degrees on Thursday, according to Weather Underground.

Previous records for those days were 79 and 80 degrees. Historic average high temperatures are 56.6 degrees for both days.

The unseasonably warm weather is forecasted to give way to cooler temperatures this weekend.  Washington is expected to see a high temperature of 52 degrees Saturday along with an 80 percent chance of rain.

Sunday’s forecast calls for a low of 41 degrees before reaching a high of 65.

Temperatures are expected to climb back into the 70s early next week.

Nationwide, record-breaking temperature patterns were observed at both extremes, depending on the region.

While high temperatures in Washington, D.C. broke a nearly 150-year old record, a powerful winter storm prompted winter weather alerts in 28 states.

Blizzards in northern states and even California led to the cancellation of more than 1,700 flights.
