The Southside Seahawks girls basketball team advanced to the fourth round of the 1A state playoffs thanks in large part to another dominant performance from their senior captain Ka’Nyah O’Neal.
O’Neal scored all 22 of Southside’s points in the first quarter and ended up outscoring the opponent all by herself in a 59-42 home victory over #18 Northwest Halifax Saturday afternoon.
The impossible to guard Seahawk ended with 46 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to propel her 7th-seeded team to the fourth round at #3 Chatham Charter Tuesday night in Siler City. Chatham Charter defeated #6 Vance Charter, 64-27 Saturday.
“Ka’Nyah came to play and set the tone from the opening tip,” coach Milton Ruffin said. “It is a huge advantage to have a player who can do whatever you need to win a ballgame, whether it be scoring, rebounding or defense.”
Southside (25-6) led wire-to-wire, but the Vikings (18-6) couldn’t take advantage of several second half chances to cut the deficit to single digits.
“We kept them in it with too many turnovers and we have to take better care of the ball Tuesday,” Ruffin said. “We did what we needed to do to advance and we’ll get some rest and get ready to travel.”
O’Neal is currently 18th among all-time North Carolina girls scorers with 2,399 career points.
