Spring roundup: Track, tennis and soccer season well underway

The Panthers, Pam Pack and Seahawks were busy on the court, the pitch and the track this week as spring sports are in full swing.
Track & Field: Southside defeated Riverside in a dual meet earlier this week. Elyjaih Baldwin led a Seahawk sweep of the discus with a throw of 109-8 feet while Elgin Stilley and Xavier Ham took second and third.
Stilley won the shot put with a toss of 42-10, while Ham and Marquez Davis finished second and third.
Tykwaille Williams won the 200 meters in 23.34 seconds, Kenny Avila was first in the 800 (2:28), Johnny Hickey took the 1600 (6:25) and Jacob Taylor was first in the 300 hurdles (3:00).
Manvonte Deloach cleared 5’8 to win the high jump, while Jeremiah Cruz leaped 35’-03 to take the triple jump.
Elsewhere, Tequon (Tater) Moore was second in the long jump (19”-10) and third in the triple jump at 33-08.
Frankie Furlough was second in the 100 meters in 12.04, William Stonebreaker was the runner-up in the 400 in 1:03.44 and Daylan Hardy was second in the high jump (5’4).
Third place finishers included Javon McCall in the 400 (1:03.74), Cameron Moore in the 800 (2:44) and Joshua Armstrong in the long jump (16’10)
On the girls side, I’Kiriyah Minor won the triple jump (34-02) and finished second in the 100 in 13.54.
Other second place finishers included De’Najah Warren in the 200 (29.04), Jayden Johnson in the 400 (1:11.44), Emma Smith in the 800 (3:00), Carly Smith in the 100 hurdles (21:24), Kennedy Hawkins in the 300 hurdles (1:03.54), Ka’Nyah O’Neal in the high jump (4’10) and Taliyah Moore in the triple jump (27-02).
Taylor Toler finished third in the 300 hurdles (1:06.34) and Malanda Smith was third in the long jump (14-8).
Girls Soccer: Washington is 5—1-1 after a victory over Northside in the Panthers first match ever Monday at Northeast Elementary. Jesmelly Lugo leads the Pack with seven goals, while Jamie Perez has six. MaryPage Moore’s team-leading 10 points came on three goals and four assists.
Southside is 3-4-2 after a 4-0 home win over West Carteret Monday and a 3-0 loss at North Pitt Wednesday. Lilly Davis is the Seahawks top scorer with seven goals.
Tennis: The Washington boys are 4-5 overall, but are second in the Eastern Plains Conference with a 3-1 record after winning the league title last year. Greene Central is currently on top at 5-0.
WHS won, 8-1, at Ayden-Grifton Tuesday, then lost a non-conference match, 7-2, at Riverside Wednesday.
Number three singles player Davis Jones leads the team with a 7-2 record, while Victor Hill is 6-1 as the number six singles player. Hill and Braden Smithwick are 6-1 as the number six doubles team.
