The Southside Seahawks baseball and softball teams are back in the 1A state playoffs for the first time since the COVD-19 pandemic and join the other area schools on the diamond Tuesday night.
The softball team is the 26th seed in the 1A East bracket with an 8-11 record and travel to #7 Chatham Charter (9-2) for a 7 p.m. first pitch. Coastal Plains Conference rival Pamlico County is the top seed in the East.
Northside (17-4) drew the 11th seed and will host #22 East Wake Academy (7-10) at 6 p.m.
Washington (16-5), the defending 2A East champions, drew the third seed and host #30 Southwest Onslow (9-13).
“We figured we would be the three seed and are glad to have home games for the first few rounds,” coach Brad Horton said. “Our team is very comfortable playing at home and it will be fun to get started. There are several good teams on our side of the bracket, so we will have our work cut out for us.”
The Pam Pack baseball team is the 19th seed in the 2A East and will travel to Eastern Plains Conference opponent West Craven (14-8). The Pam Pack lost to the Eagles, 8-2 and 5-4 during the regular season, but coach Will Tyson is okay with a third game.
“We played North Pitt in the first round last year, so we are used to it,” he said. “It also speaks to the strength of our league, since six of the seven teams made the playoffs this year. We’re glad to still be playing and we’ll be in good shape if we play with confidence.”
Southside is back in the post-season for the first time since 2019 as the #28th seed in 1A with a 9-11 record. They make the short trip to #5 Bear Grass (18-2)
Northside (17-4) is the sixth seed and host #27 West Columbus (7-15) at 3:30 p.m.
Second round games in all classes will be Friday at the higher seed.
