Southside senior Carson Edwards committed to play baseball for Mid-Atlantic Christian in Elizabeth City. Edwards is a first baseman and outfielder.

Edwards was the leadoff hitter for the Seahawks. He finished his senior season with a .319 average and finished second on the team in RBIs and hits. He lead the team in runs scored with 20 on the season.

“He was dependable,” head coach Stanley Dixon said. “He was great on both sides of the ball. He would always get on base as the lead-off hitter and he was very reliable at first base.”

Edwards is excited to get to work in Elizabeth City. He wants to continue to get better and work hard in his first year next season. He said one of his greatest strengths is keeping the team motivated and energized. “I can light up a room,” Edwards said. “I know how to light a fire under everyone on the team. I can keep the energy up and make sure my teammates are playing at their best.”

One of his most memorable moments from last season was the first-round playoff game. “Getting to experience a playoff game was my favorite memory of the season. If only we could’ve held on to win,” Edwards said.

Southside made the playoffs for the first time in the last few years. They faced the five-seed Bear Grass on the road and the Seahawks were leading for most of the game. At the bottom of the 7th inning, Southside gave up four runs and Bear Grass walked survived the upset. Despite the ending, Edwards still enjoyed the playoff atmosphere and got to experience the thrill of playoff baseball.

He said his biggest takeaway from Southside is to never give up no matter the odds. His mentality was that he should never be counted out and he is going to keep fighting for more.

Edwards said his biggest challenge will be figuring out how to live on his own in the college environment. “I never pictured myself going to a four-year university,” Edwards said. “I am excited to meet new friends and new teammates and really get the college experience.”
