Explorers of all ages traveled to Aurora last weekend with hopes of discovering a fossil or two at the Aurora Fossil Festival.
The typically three-day annual festival is a fundraiser for the Aurora Fossil Museum whose mission is to educate the public about paleontology, cultural history and natural resources in Eastern North Carolina. Located on Main Street in Aurora, the museum has exhibits, inquiry-based activities, outreach programs, events and field studies, according to their website.
A bike ride ushered in the weekend fun on Saturday morning. It was followed by a parade of Aurora and Beaufort County residents. Digging for fossils, museum tours, live music, food vendors and a dinosaur show all made for a delightful dinosaur themed weekend.
The event is normally held Memorial Day weekend; however, inclement weather that weekend pushed it to June 24 and 25.
