The North Carolina High School Softball Coaches Association named Washington High School’s Ava Mizell and Emma Orr to its 2A All-State softball team and Northside’s Bella Boykin made the 1A squad.
Mizell, a senior and Orr, a sophomore also made last year’s team, while Boykin, a junior, earned the honor for the first time.
Mizell hit .426 and led the Pack to the third round of the 2A state tournament with 37 run scored, 29 hits and 25 runs batted in. She also hit four home runs and stole 21 bases while playing solid defense at shortstop.
Orr was the Pack’s primary pitcher with a 14-4 record, an 0.70 earned run average and 161 strikeouts in 100.1 innings. She also hit .321 with a pair of home runs and 20 RBI.
“It’s a testament to their ability, but also to their character and willingness to put in the off-season work to keep improving,” coach Brad Horton said. “The season they had was absolutely the payoff for the time and effort they gave to get ready. I’m proud of both of them and am looking forward to coaching Emma again next season.”
Boykin batted .508 for the Panthers, who finished 20-5 with a trip to the fourth round of the 1A playoffs. She scored 31 runs, drove in 34 and had 19 extra base hits, including seven home runs. She also earned Coastal Plains Conference Pitcher of the Year honors with a 12-3 record, a 1.00 ERA and 113 strikeouts in the 77.1 innings pitched.
“She did a little of everything for us and obviously did it well,” coach Kevan Rabat said. “She had an outstanding season for us and I’m looking forward to another one next year.”
