WILLIAMSTON, NC — Martin General Hospital has suspended operations and filed for bankruptcy due to “financial challenges related to declining population and utilization trends,” according to a release by the hospital.
The hospital is no longer accepting patients. Those experiencing a medical emergency are encouraged to call 911. The nearest emergency room for Martin County is at ECU Health Beaufort Hospital, located 22 miles south in Washington, according to the release.
“The goal has long been to determine the right path to preserve local access to health care for the community,” the release reads. “We provided Martin County Commission with a proposal to revert the hospital back to Martin County, incorporated their requested clarifications and any requested changes and gave them an extension of time to consider our proposal at a called meeting on August 1.”
Martin County commissioners did not respond to the proposal, according to the release from Martin General Hospital.
“To be certain, these difficult decisions do not do justice to the hard work and dedication of the Martin General Hospital employees, nurses, physicians, volunteers, and board members,” the release states. “Their legacy of commitment to the community will endure in the countless lives they have touched over the years.”
U.S. Congressman Don Davis (NC-01) released a statement on the hospital’s closing.
“Deeply saddened to see Martin General Hospital closing its doors and suspending operations. This only underscores the critical need for accessible health care in eastern North Carolina,” Davis said. “With today’s announcement, I’ve been engaging with local, state, and health care officials to assist and find viable solutions. Access to quality health care is paramount, and I am fully committed to fighting for the support and resources eastern North Carolinians deserve.”
