High school football round-up: Week 1

Northside 40, Camden County 19:

The Northside Panthers used a punishing ground game and strong defensive effort to kick off the 2023 high school football season with a win at Bing Mitchell stadium Friday night.

Senior Jamie Corprew led the way for Northside with 143 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries. Max Vansant added 118 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Both backs also rushed for a two-point conversion for the Panthers. Malachi Moore added a rushing touchdown and 38 yards on  four carries.

Senior quarterback Hunter Chrismon was 2-of-5 passing, including a 13-yard strike to Sincere Columbus in the back of the end zone to end the first half.

Linebacker Gus Vansant led the Northside defense with 11 tackles. Zanek McCloud picked off two Camden County passes. Landon Buck and Max Vansant had each had six tackles and Buck blocked an extra point for the Panthers.

 

Croatan 21, Washington 6.

The Pam Pack struggled offensively in the season opener. In the first quarter, Washington fumbled on their own five-yard line leading to an easy score for Croatan.

Croatan would score again in the first quarter. Following the second touchdown, Jerai Davenport ran the kickoff back for a 60-yard touchdown. After that, scores were hard to come by and Croatan would score again in the second quarter and both teams were held scoreless in the second half.

The Pack will have their home opener next week against D.H. Conley.

North Duplin 20, Southside 18.

Seahawks and Rebels exchanged blows for the whole game. Hawks had the ball with about a minute left in the fourth quarter. They had 4th and goal inside the 10-yard line.

QB Luke Bullock scrambled out of the pocket and made it to the endzone but right before crossing the plane, he fumbled the ball into the endzone and out of bounds. The Seahawks were stunned and the Rebels took over and went into victory formation.

Tequon (Tater) Moore led the offense with six runs for 105 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 4 receptions for 117 yards and a touchdown. Myquan Clark had 12 rushes for 50 yards and Brian Salinas had 10 rushes for 44 yards.

Bullock had six completions on 13 attempts with 136 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Mckyle Sastre had 10 tackles and Salinas had five. Jeremiah Cruz and Nehemiah Credle both had 3.5 tackles with Moore finished with three.

Pungo Christian 44, Father Capodanno 0.

The Raiders blanked the Grunts in the season opener. They jumped out to a quick lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

They were led by Quayshawn Artis who had two rushing and two receiving touchdowns. He had six carries for 75 yards and 46 yards receiving. Artis also scored in two two-point conversions and had an interception on defense.

QB Austin Gibbs went 6 for 11 passing the football with 114 yards and three touchdowns. Gibbs also ran for 95 yards.

Michael Cripe had a receiving touchdown and two interceptions on defense.

They will have another road game next week against Mattamuskeet.
